SCRIPT GUIDE/OUTLINE

SCRIPTWRITING PLAN FOR YOU - Fill in gaps

You can use this template if it helps you. Otherwise, simply use your character motivations from your treatment, brainstorm materials, synopsis, and scene breakdown is something you need to do.

SCRIPT PLANNING

Brainstorming, Characterisation and Scene Breakdowns

Name of my film:

Beginning - write down bullet points 2-3 scenes here, usually it will involve the hero, or an establishing scene/shot, during the opening scenes you might see a glimpse of his/her downfall, explain this below:

Middle - the hero (who is the protagonist) will encounter his/her adversary and his/her external (outside conflict such as fighting) or internal conflict (his thoughts/anxieties, etc). Write down bullet points for 3-4 scenes here:

The end - how has the hero destroyed his/her adversary? Is this through external conflict (as in he's been shot or beaten up) or is it internal (the protagonist/hero has let go of his/her inner demons!). Write down bullet points for the final 2 scenes here:

Central characters and motivations below:
(Example: JAMESON is a happy-go-lucky Irish immigrant from a large family. He lives in New York and struggles to make ends up. He meets ISLA and slowly his dreams turn into a reality as they start a family. It’s not a good time for JAMESON as ISLA is the subject of a police interrogation):

Describe your central character here in a scriptwriting format:
(Example: JAMESON enters the room, he’s 45, broad shouldered and has a sad expression. He coughs but spits out blood. It’s clear from his actions that he has been beaten up as his eyes are purple and he cannot stand still):

Describe your locations/settings here:
(Example: JAMESON’S office is dark. JAMESON looks up to the ceiling and as a fan slowly rotates above his head. The office is dusty and JAMESON clears the dust of his desk with his left hand):

Things to help you write character motivations

What is their age?
What is their height, what do they look like? Is there something different about the way they look?
What is their marital status?
What background do they come from? What it challenging? FYI: Usually film noir characters have suffered through a struggle of some sort.
What is their purpose in the film and how do they relate to other characters?
